Stay Safe After a Storm: Conducting a Home Safety Check • Kaizen Homes

Written by Kaizen Homes | Oct. 08, 2024

After a major storm, it’s critical to take the right precautions before entering your home, especially if it’s been without power and water for several days. That is why we created this Home Safety Check. Here are the key safety tips to ensure you’re protected:

Home Safety Check

  1. Check for Electrical Hazards:
Always assume power lines could be live. If there’s standing water or the power has been restored, shut off your main breaker before entering the home. It’s safer to avoid any electrical outlets or appliances until an electrician confirms they’re safe.
  2. Inspect for Structural Damage:
Prolonged exposure to water can weaken your home’s structure. Look for visible cracks in walls, sagging ceilings, or foundation shifts. If the damage looks serious, don’t enter until a professional can assess the situation.
  3. Mold and Mildew Risks:
After several days, mold can grow rapidly in damp environments. Wear an N95 mask to protect yourself from inhaling mold spores. Ventilate your home as soon as you can by opening doors and windows.
  4. Be Aware of Pests and Wildlife:
After a storm, it’s common for wildlife to seek shelter inside homes. Before entering, check for any signs of animals, snakes, or pests that may have moved in during the storm.
  5. Check for Gas Leaks:
If your home uses natural gas, the risk of leaks is high after a hurricane. If you smell gas or hear hissing, leave immediately and call the utility company to inspect.
  6. Water Contamination:
If your water supply has been compromised, don’t drink or use the water until local authorities confirm it’s safe.

What Should You Do Next?

Once you’ve made sure your home is safe to enter, follow these steps:
  • Perform an exterior walk-around inspection for any visible damage.
  • Wear protective clothing and use a flashlight to check inside for water damage, cracks, or other hazards.
  • Remove any wet or soaked materials like carpets or furniture to prevent mold from growing further.
  • Contact professionals to inspect your electrical, gas, and water systems before restoring services.
